Caged Bird

If you open the door of a cage, one day,

The bird inside may fly away,

But if you’re really good to me,

The bird will fly back eventually,

Honey, that’s just like you and me,

Ya’ the prettiest girl I ever did see,

But doves of peace, should really be free,

Peacocks of beauty, should have haven and tranquillity,

Not locked in chains, seeking sanctuary.

Tried once to keep you,

Just for once, under lock and key,

But a caged bird always longs to float along and be free.

Tried once to bottle your song,

Along with you in a cage,

But your beauty didn’t belong,

It’s a much better view, when the wind is strong,

High in the clouds, where eagles are soaring,

Spreading your wings is much more alluring,

Though you may lose your way, the sunshine’s reassuring,

Like an eagle, I glimpse you, and watch you, adoring.

North and South, East and West,

You’re a white swan,

Whose ballet I love to dance best,

Only for a second, on your perch, do you rest,

When lightening and thunderstorms put us to the test.

Just in case, I forgot about you,

Luckily, you dropped a white feather as you flew,

Which drifted towards me in the wind,

But, like you, I tried to catch it, cage it,

But your wings wouldn’t be trimmed,

The spirit of my caged bird was in that single feather,

Bringing the Sun, where there was only stormy weather.

Come and take me away with you,

Lift me on a breeze,

And all my troubles, too,

Into the blue, together we flew,

Romancing like only love birds can do.

Do you mind, perhaps, if alongside you I’m perched ?

As, my beautiful caged bird, it’s you for a lifetime, I have searched,

Maybe, a nightengale whistles, because he’s forgotten the words,

Maybe, we whisper, because we’re two love birds … (repeat to fade).
